What's Happening at MYS

I have been knitting furiously on my newest shawl using Classic Elite's "Chalet". It is baby alpaca and bamboo, knitted on the bias with 3 shades of gray. It is so delicious I can't wait to cuddle up in it. I think I will make an afghan in the brown and tan tones. It is the perfect, easy to knit, winter project.

Even though it has been surprisingly mild in Mendocino so far, it is still cosy to curl up with yarn and needles or hook, on a cool night. This February and March you can learn to knit a cardigan O make an entrelac hat O create a luxury afghan O crochet a shawl O quilt a pillow and O felt slippers at the Mendocino Yarn Shop. New spring and summer yarns have started to arrive. Come in and see what is new. See the current newsletter for details and a free pattern.

If there is a technique you are interested in learning let us know. And don't forget, if you are planning to come to Mendocino with a group of knitting friends, we can arrange for a class in a topic your group might want to explore. Happy Knitting ~ Annelle

Karen's Retirement

Karen Moreland, a valuable member of the MYS staff since the very beginning in Jan 2001, is retiring. Saying good bye is hard - so we are not saying good-bye! Karen will be 'hanging out" at the store and teaching some classes this winter. She has also agreed to fill in when needed. So, we will miss Karen's expertise and helpfulness on a regular basis, but look forward to seeing her in the store as a friend. Thanks for all the years of fun and friendship, Karen.

Introducing Our Newest Staff Members:

Pamela Allen & Amelia Keller-Boren

Amelia is a Senior at the Mendocino Community School. She has been a great asset to the organization and neatness of the store this fall. Amelia is a "freeform" knitter. Her knitted pants and leggings are works of art. She works on Tuesdays and Saturdays, so come in and meet her.

Pamela Allen joined us in January. Pamela is an accom- plished knitter, designer and display artist. Her priority is to offer helpful service to knitters, but we all appreciate her ability to install window and gallery displays.

Knitting as Community

Winter has arrived in Mendocino, so we are getting out our sweaters and shawls. Winter is a great time to take a class and to advance your knitting or crocheting skills.

Our fall classes were well attended, so our teachers are preparing many new classes for January and February. We hope you will be inspired to join our knitting community.

Knitting is a very versatile activity. You may knit with others or all by yourself. Projects that require simple knitting, are great for "public" knitting. For quiet moments, or while listening to an audio book, you might choose a project that requires more concentration.

Knitting is a good way to meet new friends or get together with old ones. There are several knitting groups on the coast-- In Mendocino: at the Mendocino Community Library on Wednesdays from 1:30 to 3:00, and at the Mendocino Yarn Shop on Thursdays from 5:00 to 6:30. In Fort Bragg: at the Fort Bragg Library on Mondays from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.

These groups are friendly and informal. Or you may want to start your own knitting group. I know of several "close knit" groups that meet regularly and whose members are a great support group.

Knitting in community offers inspiration from others, a chance to add to our skills, make friends, or simply take some time to knit.

Join a group, take a class, and by all means - Knit on!
